Tennis Scoring & Match Terms

  • Ad (Advantage) – The point after deuce; “Ad-In” means the server has the edge, “Ad-Out” means the receiver does.
  • Break Point – A point where the receiver can win the game by breaking the server’s serve.
  • Deuce – A 40–40 tie. A player must win two consecutive points to take the game.
  • Double Fault – Two missed serves in a row, resulting in the loss of the point.
  • Game – A segment of the match made up of points. Players need to win four points (by a margin of two) to win a game.
  • Let – A serve that touches the net but still lands in the proper service box. It is replayed.
  • Love – The term for zero in tennis scoring (e.g., “15–Love”).

  • Volley – A shot hit out of the air before it bounces, usually near the net.
  • Overhead – A powerful shot hit above the head, often in response to a lob.
  • Drop Shot – A softly hit ball that barely clears the net and dies quickly on the opponent’s side.
  • Groundstroke – Any shot hit after the ball has bounced (includes forehands and backhands).
  • Topspin – A type of spin that causes the ball to dip quickly, allowing players to hit with net clearance and control.

  • Baseline – The farthest back line of the court; where most rallies begin and are played.
  • Service Box – The rectangular area where a serve must land to be valid.
  • Sideline – The side boundary of the court. Singles and doubles have different sidelines.
